How does an original idea come into existence? I think it comes from years of immersion in design, fashion observation and questioning everything you’ve learned. In other words, I think the best way to design something truly original is to learn everything about fashion design, from the beginning of history until now, and then to forget about all of it when you design.

I think that behind each novel design is the understanding of the fundamentals of good design. In this fashion design guide, we’re going to cover the fundamentals and explain why they matter. Because they do.

The most important elements when designing clothing (known as “garments” in the trade) are fabric, draping and construction techniques. These elements are the most important elements in any field of design. For example, in architecture, these elements are known as material, structure and construction. The quality and craftsmanship of today’s clothing have declined compared to clothing made 30 or 40 years ago.
